在传统的物流管理中，由于物流被看作是企业的经营活动中辅助的内容，因此许多企业没有物流战略，缺乏战略性的物流规划和运筹。有的企业虽然生产管理搞得很好，产品研究开发也很有水平，但是产品就是销不出去，原因是多方面的，其中之一可能就是物流渠道不通畅导致产品分销受阻，影响了产品的进一步生产与开发。有的企业由于原材料的供应问题没有解决好，没有建立良好的原材料供应渠道，影响了产品的生产，也同样制约了企业经营战略的实现。有的企业在售后服务方面，缺乏用户服务的观念，没有建立通畅的用户信息反馈机制，使企业的经营战略没能跟上用户的需求，由于企业没有捕捉市场信息的敏捷性， 终也落得失去用户的悲惨结局。

供应链管理的战略思想就是要通过企业与企业之间的有效合作，建立一种低成本、高效率、响应性好、具有敏捷性的企业经营机制，产生一种超常的竞争优势;就是要使企业从成本、质量、时间、服务、灵活性等方面显著提高竞争优势，加快企业产品进入市场的速度。这种战略思想的实现需要供应链物流系统从企业战略的高度去规划与运筹，并把供应链管理战略通过物流战略的贯彻实施得以落实。
