针对于化工行业本身所固有的特点，化工行业信息化建设的切入点应体现在先进的生产装置自动化控制、优化的工艺流程、高效的生产调度、优质的设备管理、精确及时的能量和物料衡量上，以达到生产工艺安全、稳定、长周期的目的。同时，通过信息技术的应用，加快企业技术创新、管理创新、体制创新的进展。

化工企业信息化的重中之重是以管理信息化促进企业信息化，企业信息化应该回归到以“应用为主导”的主线上来，从应用入手，吸收国内外先进的生产管理理念，用以改善我们企业管理经营者的基本工作条件。

化工企业信息化建设进入 阶段的标准之一就是建设企业核心的业务管理和应用系统。而在这个阶段 有代表性的是企业内部的资源计划系统（ERP）。ERP是一种科学管理思想的计算机实现，它通常由产品研发和设计、作业控制、生产计划、投入品采购、市场营销、销售、库存、财务和人事等方面以及相应的模块组成，采取集成优化的方式进行管理。ERP不是机械地适应企业现有的流程，而是对企业流程中不合理的部分提出改进和优化建议，并能导致组织机构的重新设计和业务流程的重组。

ERP主要针对于企业的内部管理，一方面是把企业所有的信息资源，即业务各个部分所涉及的资源紧密地结合起来，以达到资源利用的协调; 另一方面是通过整合使得业务各环节资源的利用效率得到提高。我国化工企业目前普遍存在着信息化程度不高，信息资源分散的痼疾，这使得已经建成的信息系统和企业自有信息资源不能够被充分地利用，影响了企业信息化的效能，而ERP正是根治这一顽症的良方。同时，ERP也是企业实施电子商务的支撑系统，电子商务与ERP之间存在着种种密切的联系，是企业通过信息化实现利润的有效途径和有力助手。
